Munnings's autobiography records the weeks of hunting and partying at Woolsthorpe with enormous pleasure and this painting of the Master, in his boots with the distinctive flesh-coloured tops, was the culmination of his stay. Major Bouch posed for the picture on a saddle-horse against the huge north window on the Woolsthorpe staircase, which provided Munnings with perfect light. Munnings moved to Cornwall for an indefinite period at the beginning of the second decade of the 20th Century and took a large converted sail loft for a studio, with a stable below. Munnings found that Osborne made a fine figure, posed in a scarlet coat and a black cap, for a spate of hunting studies with Cornish backgrounds of moors and woods or sometimes remembered Norfolk ones of flat fields and grey skies. Munnings regularly rode out with the Staghounds...Sybil Harker and Munnings were lifelong friends and the sitter is portrayed in profile, riding sidesaddle on her bay hunter, Saxa, against a Norfolk landscape. The hound in the foreground is believed to have been her favourite...the towers of Wymondham Abbey in the distance. Munnings described Sybil Harker in his autobiography as ‘tall and dark, wearing a dark blue habit and a black velvet cap.
