His wife, Violet, kept a small cottage in Exmoor as a hunting box; and it was there that he spent much of the war. The rural isolation appeared to do him good: he was more at peace with himself during his time on Exmoor than at any time since his visits to Cornwall more than 30 years previously. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\nMost of the horses that Munnings kept at Castle House had been slaughtered due to the war effort, and he was forced to find fresh sources of inspiration.
